Our History and Heritage

Chamberlain College of Nursing has a 125-year history of preparing extraordinary nursing graduates.

Our roots go back to the Deaconess tradition of 19th-century Europe. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, studied at a Deaconess facility in Germany and later applied the concepts she learned to her nursing practice. In 1889, an evangelical pastor in St. Louis, Missouri, proposed establishing healthcare services based on the Deaconess model to address the needs of the local community. Those services evolved into the Deaconess School of Nursing and, later, the Deaconess College of Nursing.

In March 2005, DeVry Inc. acquired Deaconess. A term of the acquisition agreement required DeVry to change the name of the school. The chosen name, Chamberlain, is derived from the Middle English word "chaumberlein," which means "chief steward" – in recognition of the critical role of the nurse as the central steward and coordinator of patient care.

Today, with pre- and post-licensure programs, a growing network of campuses, and robust online offerings, Chamberlain College of Nursing continues to raise the standard of nursing education and advance healthcare outcomes in communities across the country and around the world.

Welcome from the President chamberlain college of nursing

We are very pleased to be able to bring to the Chicago area a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program with a long history and rich tradition. The Addison campus represents the third Chamberlain College of Nursing campus to open outside of the St. Louis area where Chamberlain began in 1889 and still exists today.

Our mission is clear – we are committed to providing the educational background and tools that will culminate in a graduate who will be an excellent nurse. Our experienced faculty and staff are dedicated to bringing their expertise, their unique ability to teach, and their passion for professional nursing to our students. Our proudest moment is when healthcare organizations in the Chicagoland area hire our graduates and tell us that Chamberlain students exemplify the high standards that they expect in their nurses.

We believe our single purpose mission, coupled with small classes, high-tech laboratories and an open, positive environment for learning makes Chamberlain College of Nursing the ideal setting for an individual who wants to pursue a nursing degree.

I invite those of you who are interested in pursuing a rewarding and exciting career as a professional nurse to contact us for more information. We look forward to hearing from you.
